Gabby, Tonka, Raykin, and their sibling Kai came to us in the kind of heartbreaking condition we wish no animal or family had to endure.
At just two weeks old, these tiny Yorkshire Terrier puppies arrived at Toronto Humane Society, helpless and vulnerable. Their mother had tragically passed away shortly after giving birth, leaving them without her care or nourishment. Overwhelmed by the challenges of feeding and caring for neonatal puppies, their family made the decision to surrender them to give them a chance to survive.
When we first saw them, the puppies were presented in a box, malnourished, weak, and soiled in urine and feces. Without proper feeding or the help required to get them to urinate and defecate at such a young age, their lives hung precariously by a thread.
Our team worked tirelessly to stabilize the litter, but heartbreak struck when Kai, the smallest and most fragile, wasn’t able to go on. Little Gabby, too, teetered on the brink, fighting for her life.
This is a story we see far too often—newborn animals left vulnerable, pushed out of the picture because families lack resources, awareness, or finances to provide the care they need. We don’t know all the details of what happened, but we understand how easily a tragedy like this can spiral out of control. Whether it’s the emotional toll of losing a beloved pet, or the unexpected time required for round-the-clock care of puppies that no longer had a mom to feed or nurture them, these situations are deeply challenging.
But there’s hope. Together, we can be there for animals like Gabby, Tonka, and Raykin—ensuring they are kept in the picture.
A family member of Michael Creber is matching all donations up to $25,000, doubling your impact. Together, we can ensure pets are kept in the picture, no matter how vulnerable or dire their circumstances may seem.
Giving online, or by phone at (416) 392-2273 ext. 2162, is extra important to help keep pets in the picture this holiday season!
