Left in a Box: Clementine’s Story

| December 4, 2024

Clementine’s story began in heartbreak. An impossibly tiny, fawn-coloured French Bulldog, just 8 weeks old, was found in a box at a park. A crowd had gathered, noticing she was bleeding. Luckily, one of the people in that crowd was able to bring her to Toronto Humane Society, where our team immediately sprang into action.

Diagnosed with rectal prolapse, Clementine underwent urgent surgery required to rectify it before any life-threatening complications arose.

Since then, her recovery has been a bit bumpy. Pain medication made her nauseous, and setbacks meant ongoing visits to our medical team. Despite these challenges, Clementine is inching closer to starting her next chapter.

We still need your help to keep pets like Clementine in the picture.

Imagine a puppy doing “zoomies” through your halls, bringing joy into your family, and then realizing something is terribly wrong as you notice trails of blood through those same halls. That joy of having a puppy turns into a tight feeling in your chest as you calculate the cost of veterinary care. You weigh it against skyrocketing grocery prices, bills, and an income that barely covers the essentials. Suddenly, you’re faced with an impossible choice: do you eat, heat your home, or help your suffering puppy? And then, you imagine the judgment, or shame, you could face if you bring her to a shelter. Or worse, thinking that the only option available for when you can’t access the care she needs, would be euthanasia.

No one expects a pet to need surgery or extensive veterinary care right away. And in our community, very few people have access to the financial resources needed for pet emergencies at the moment. Pets are getting pushed out of the picture at an alarming rate.

Your generosity ensures pets like Clementine get the care they need, sparing families from impossible decisions.

Right now, your gift goes twice as far!

Doane Grant Thornton Foundation is matching all donations up to $50,000, doubling the impact of your support. Together, we can make sure pets like Clementine are never pushed out of the picture.

Giving online (or by phone) is extra important to help keep pets in the picture this holiday season!
