Adopt or Foster Beau, A Big-Hearted Bernese Mountain Dog

| March 19, 2025

Beau has spent much of his young life in shelters, and while we strive to provide the best care possible, the shelter is not a true home. Beau needs a place where he can truly relax and recover, whether it’s a short-term foster placement or a permanent, loving home. In a supportive environment, he’ll have the chance to decompress and finally experience the life he deserves.

How Beau’s Journey Began

Beau came to us at just 11 months old from another shelter. He was diagnosed with moderate to severe bilateral hip dysplasia, which affects his mobility.

Despite this, Beau’s spirit stayed strong. He recently had surgery on his left hip and is recovering well, though it’s been challenging for such a young, large-breed dog to manage his energy during recovery.

Now, Beau needs the love and patience of a family to support him through the next phase of his journey— starting a life outside of the shelter doors.

What Makes Beau Special

Despite his challenges, Beau’s previous foster parents have seen just how lovable and affectionate he can be. Here’s what they had to say about him:

  • Affectionate and loving: Beau adores attention and ear scratches. He’s a sweet dog at heart, always seeking affection.
  • Quick learner: Beau is very food-motivated and learns commands quickly when treats are involved. He’s smart and eager to please, making him a great candidate for training.
  • Toy-loving and playful: He enjoys chewing on toys, especially non-splintering wood-like chews that help calm his anxiety. He’s a powerful chewer, so durable toys are a must!
  • Full of energy: Beau has bursts of energy, particularly in the evenings, and needs plenty of exercise to help him stay calm and content. He can become frustrated if not properly exercised, which is why a foster or adoptive home where he can get regular activity is crucial for his well-being.

Beau’s Ideal Foster or Adoptive Home

Beau is looking for a patient, experienced dog pet parent who can help him settle down in a calm, stable environment. Here’s what his ideal home would look like:

  • Exercise and enrichment: Beau thrives on regular exercise and mental stimulation. He needs a home where he can burn off energy and engage in fun activities like training, playing with toys, and exploring new environments.
  • Dedicated caregivers: Whether fostering or adopting, Beau needs someone who is committed to helping him manage his energy levels. He’ll need help learning to greet new people and other dogs calmly, and he’ll benefit from ongoing training.

Why Beau Needs a Home Now

Life in the shelter has been hard on Beau, and it’s beginning to affect his mental well-being. The shelter environment has amplified some of his behavioural challenges, particularly his frustration and over-arousal. Beau needs a home environment where he can finally relax and be a dog.

Beau’s foster parents and our on-site care givers have seen the kind, loving dog he can be, and we all truly believe he just needs the right environment to flourish.
