There is nothing more heartwarming than these cuddly fuzzies that have stolen the hearts of many individuals around the world. Show some extra love to your little companion (s) as we celebrate National Guinea Pig Appreciation Day. Here are some fun activities to make this holiday extra meaningful for your piggy.
Keep your guinea pig healthy and happy by providing them with plenty of toys that you can make with common household items like toilet paper rolls. Guinea pigs love to chew and toss these around. You can also stuff the tubes with hay and hide treats inside of them to make the toys even more exciting! Be sure to cut a slit down the length of the tube before giving it to your piggy to prevent your companion from getting stuck in it.
Help your guinea pig relax by giving them a gentle massage. To start, lightly press with two or three fingers, while using circular motions. Start at the neck and slowly work down each side of the spine. You can also rub their belly lightly with your fingertips as you move upwards towards the head.
Want some mental and physical stimulation for your guinea pig? Use your piggies’ favourite treats and place broken pieces around an enclosed space. Hide the treats in tunnels or behind toys and let your guinea pig roam around to find them!
Whip up some nutritional and yummy cucumber melon biscuits for your guinea pig. Simply blend 1 cucumber, and a cup of melon of your choice (watermelon, honeydew, or cantaloupe) with ½ of pig pellets (blitzed in a blender until crushed). Combine these ingredients and squeeze out the extra liquid as you mold the mixture into small grape sized balls. Bake in a low-heat oven (250-300 degrees) for 30 minutes to an hour. Flip after the first 20 minutes and cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
Spend some extra quality time with your fur baby with a floor time session. Allow your guinea pig to explore freely as you lay near them. This is a great way to build a bond with little effort as they can satisfy their curiosity and get comfortable around you. Unplug from your electronics and make this day a memorable one for your piggy.
