Fun Giving Tuesday Activities for Kids and Adults!

Giving Tuesday, which takes place on November 29^th 2016, is described as the ‘opening day of the Giving Season’. It’s a time for Canadians to come together and support their communities.

It is also a day for us to kick off our Hope for the Holidays campaign here at the shelter! Our Hope for the Holidays campaign raises funds and awareness for the animals in our shelter, especially those who have been with us for a long a time and who we want to be in a loving, forever home in time for the holiday season!

We’ve got a whole bunch of fun ways for you to get involved and help homeless pets at our shelter, so please read on!

PawItForward Donation Drive

Bring the spirit of giving to your workplace on Giving Tuesday! Why not host a donation drive for the animals?

Bring a box and ask your colleagues to bring an item in to donate. You can use our Hope For the Holidays poster to let everyone know about your donation drive. Download our poster, type in the details, and print/email it to your coworkers to get everyone involved. We are always looking for:

• Gently used blankets and towels
• Toys
• Food and treats
• Collars and leashes
• Beds
• Coats and boots

Pen Pals for Pets

We have a number of dogs, cats and small pets who have been at the shelter for a long time! This year, to raise awareness for our long-term residents, we’re asking kids to be a Pen Pal to a homeless pet at the Toronto Humane Society. Here’s how it works:

• On the 16^th November, we will email you a letter-writing kit, including a template & profiles for our long-stay animals. Your child or class can write letters to our long-stay animals, giving them hope for the holidays. They can present their letter however they like – use coloured pens, draw pictures, decorate with stickers…however they feel best expresses their creativity!
• Mail the letter/s or drop off at the shelter by Monday 28^th November.
• On Giving Tuesday (29^th November) we will display the letters in the shelter alongside the animal’s name for visitors to admire. We hope this campaign will help kids connect with animals in need and learn about responsible pet ownership, and bring awareness to the animals who have been looking for a home for a long time.
• We also have a very limited number of spots available on the 29^th November for a tour of the shelter for children who have written letters. This is a class activity to take place between the hours of 11am – 3pm.
