Dogs and cats make quite a catch
(Continued from home page)"Whenever we get to a point where we are getting full, that is the time to get some of these animals adopted," the society's Lee Oliver said yesterday.
The animals have had all their shots and have been micro-chipped, dewormed, spayed or neutered and have been given a clean bill of health from staff veterinarians, he said. New owners will get six weeks of free pet medical insurance.
Those interested are asked to bring photo ID for a background check for animal abuse.
"There are people out there who shouldn't have animals and we want to make sure we know who we are talking to," Oliver said.
ANIMALS ARE SAFE
He urged people to be wary about buying animals from backyard breeders, pet stores and flea markets. What might seem a cheap, easy and convenient deal could come with a high price -- a sick animal.
A dog purchased at an Etobicoke store in January had rabies, Oliver said.
"With those sellers you don't know what you're getting," he said. "But you know when you come to the humane society you are getting a decent and well trained animal to begin with."
About 60% of the animals up for adoption where surrendered by owners who couldn't care for them, while the others are strays and pets that were abused. The pets are at the society's River and Queen Sts. office or at 2802 Victoria Park Ave, unit #13. Click Here to Read the Article at torontosun.com
