Volunteer

It takes a special person who is willing to donate their time toward a good cause. By taking the initiative to become a Volunteer, Volunteer Dog Walker, Volunteer Kitten Feeder, or Foster Parent, you show your commitment to the well-being of animals.

We are looking for individuals who:

  • Are reliable and prepared to make a commitment to the animals
  • Be a serious and committed individual
  • Are able to work as part of a team and independently
  • Have good communication skills and can follow direction
  • Have the ability to remain calm in an emergency
  • Have a love and respect for all animals

Specific Requirements:

  • Must be able to commit to at least three hours per week for at least six months
  • Must be at least 18-years-old to volunteer with the animals
  • Have had a current tetanus shot
  • Provide two references

Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer for the Toronto Humane Society.  Please feel free to come to the shelter at 11 River Street, on the southeast corner of Queen and River, to complete an application.

For those commuting by TTC, from the Queen Street station, take the streetcar east to the corner of River and Queen Streets.  Driving, DVP South to the Bayview South exit.  Follow to the end of Bayview and make the first right to the parking lot of the shelter.

When you arrive at the shelter ask where you need to go to complete a volunteer application.  You can complete the application between 11am to 6pm daily. We will have a quick interview and will need to know your availability to be scheduled for your shift.  The Toronto Humane Society asks all volunteers to commit to one 4 hour shift per week for a minimum of 6 months.  The shifts begin as early as 8am with the last shift starting at 11pm.  At the interview you can discuss the area of the shelter you are interested in helping with.  If there is a need at that time, orientation and training will be scheduled.

Once again, thank you for your interest.
