Adopt a Pet
Senior Dogs

  Senior Dogs

Some animals are harder to find homes for than others. Kittens and puppies practically adopt themselves. Here at The Toronto Humane Society we want all animals to find loving new homes, especially those who are needy, like senior dogs. We have dedicated this section to older animals to inform the public about the joys of adopting a senior pet.

While shaping the life of a young pet sounds appealing, giving a second chance to an older animal can be equally rewarding. Older animals possess many admirable qualities that come with maturity and senior pets will be forever grateful for the love and attention you give them. Older dogs have many benefits when it comes to behavioural issues: they don't need to be taught not to chew such things as table legs; they are already housebroken; they are less disruptive in a new home environment.

Remember: you might not be able to teach an old dog new tricks, but you can certainly get a lot of pleasure discovering some of the old tricks he or she might have learned over the years! If you want to give a senior pet a new lease on life please see the list below to view some of the senior dogs available for adoption.

Below are some of our senior dogs currently available for adoption:

Claira
A108033

Female (Spayed)
8-10 years

Claira is a beautiful, affectionate, and loyal old girl of around the ages 8 to 10. As can sometimes happen in the German Shepherd breed, Claira has hip dysplasia. Some days her limp is glaringly clear and others she becomes very playful showing little sign of her problem. She is afraid of stairs and should never use them. She is intelligent as you will soon learn. She recognizes the commands “Sit” and “Stay”. At home she never barks and is a quiet and obedient companion. Claira is a dog who loves and needs the company of her guardians. As she is territorial with her space outdoors, Claira does well in dog parks only when there are many dogs in the area. She does not get along very well with other dogs in one-on-one situations. Soon enough you will be able to predict her warning signs but a muzzle is recommended when walking Claira out on the sidewalk (crowded areas should be avoided). From time to time, Claira poops indoors, so a home with a backyard is highly preferable so she can easily run outside if she needs. It would also be preferable that her owner have air-conditioning as she does shed, and thus it would be good to brush her regularly. Claira has been unlucky in the past and she deserves to find a good home to accommodate her needs as she gets older.

Claira is in a foster home now, but is still available for adoption.

Patty
A105751

Female
10 years

Patty is a 10 year old female collie X. She requires a home with no kids and no stairs. Patty is food possessive and would it would be best if she went to a home with an owner experienced with this behavior but it is manageable with the right training. Unfortunatly, Patty suffers from incontinence and would need an owner understanding of this issue and someone who would be able to help her by giving her frequent bathroom breaks. She is a lovely old girl who really needs a home with no stairs and preferably not an apartment because she is not good with strangers. Patty is a nice dog that is very easy to please with quiet companionship and short frequent walks.

Patty is in a foster home now, but is still available for adoption.

Keesha
A103479

Female
8 years

Keesha is an 8 year old female Shepherd cross. She is a nice girl but is not used to being handled a lot. She is territorial and may not like some dogs so she will need a home with no other dogs or kids. Sometimes she can be food and toy possessive so experience with these issues is a must. Keesha is a black beauty who needs an owner who is firm but air and is willing to see a trainer to help resolve her issues. It would be beneficial for her to go to a rural home where there aren’t a lot of visitors so that she can feel more relaxed and less defensive about strangers. Please come down and meet Keesha. She is a great girl and will make a wonderful addition to a mature home.

Purdy
A091765

Female (Spayed)
9 years

Purdy is a very sweet girl who gets along well with kids and other pets. However, she will be on medication for life and the cost of that has scared off a few potential adopters As well, because she is 9 years old and already has medical problems, several people have shied away from adopting her because they felt her prognosis was poor. But the vets say with her meds, she’ll live a long and fulfilling life.

Purdy is in a foster home now, but is still available for adoption.

Sage
A097247

Female
10 years

My name is Sage; I am an older gal, almost 10 and was abandoned here by my owner after having lived with them my entire life. I am a very fearful girl and I do not like other dogs. I will need an owner who is experienced with both my breed and in dealing with dog aggression. The best type of environment for me to live in would be a rural home with no other animals and minimal visitors. I can be quite affectionate once I get to know you and I really enjoy spending time outdoors and can become quite playful and frisky for my age. Sometimes I get upset because everything is so new to me. I’ve had the same home my whole life until I was brought to THS. The staff always work hard at helping me feel better by scratching behind my ears and spending time with me.
